The Nalgene OG Story

In the 1970s, conservationists began discouraging the disposal of cans and glass bottles by burning and burying them in the wilderness & in recreation areas. Eventually, some of those places responded with regulations and began forbidding such materials. Nalgene products quickly became popular replacements among backpackers for storing consumables; the light, wide-mouthed high-density bottles were more secure than plastic bags and were used for both liquids and solid foods. Originally, wilderness travelers purchased Nalgene products from laboratory-equipment suppliers or gained access to them through their networks, like in their workplaces.

Company lore has it that the Nalgene Company president discovered that his son's Boy Scout troop was using Nalgene laboratory containers for camping. Since then, the company has re-packaged and marketed the items for consumer sales through their line of Nalgene Outdoor Products. In 2018, Epic Water Filters & Nalgene began to discuss a collaboration between the Nalgene 32 oz wide mouth bottle and the Urban Filter system from Epic Water Filters (both made in the USA). We could not be happier putting our filter into the OG American made water bottle, the Nalgene 32 oz wide mouth.

Why OG?

"OG" back in the day used to mean Original Gangster although some younger people these days use OG as a quicker way of saying "The Original" - at Epic, we thought, what is more OG than the Nalgene 32oz wide mouth bottle? That is why we call it the Epic Nalgene OG. It's the original gangster.

Perfect Bottle for Traveling Overseas

Our Outdoor Adventure Bottle Filter is the cream of the crop when it comes to portable water filtration. What's the main difference between the Outdoor Adventure Filter and our Urban Filter? Both filters are engineered to effectively reduce waterborne pathogens like Giardia and Cryptosporidium by up to 99.9999% while also removing chlorine, VOCs, heavy metals, industrial pollutants, agricultural runoff and trace pharmaceuticals in addition to 68% of fluoride. But, the sub-micron Outdoor Adventure Filter also removes biological pathogens like bacteria and viruses in addition to everything that our Urban Filter removes. This is the appropriate replacement filter for the Ultimate Outdoor Travel Bottle but you can use this filter in any of our new bottles!!!! The American-made Outdoor Adventure water filter is tested against NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53, 401, P473, and P231 for contaminant reduction & removal (see Outdoor Filter Test Results for more).

What makes it the "Cream of the Crop" of our bottle filters?

Whether filling up at a public fountain, rain water, a local creek, or a mud puddle in Bali, you can have peace of mind that the Outdoor Adventure Filter allows you to drink any water no matter how polluted. The Outdoor Adventure Filter is designed for use with any polluted water source (excluding salt water). This advanced biological water filter instantly purifies water contaminants as you squeeze and/or suck from your bottle, guaranteeing a stress-free experience when drinking from heavily contaminated water sources.

The Outdoor Adventure Filter offers the comfort that comes with having access to clean water in emergency situations, international travel, hiking, camping or any outdoor activity. It really is ideal for any indoor or outdoor use, and can be used with any type of water source: tap or rain water, rivers, streams or even lakes (excluding salt water).

It is designed for use with water that is non-turbid and non-stagnant. It removes up to 99.9999% of contaminants and pollutants found in fresh water supplies and up to 99.99% of other biological (pathogens). It also removes up to 68% of fluoride. This filter is the optimal choice for hikers, campers, and international globe trekkers alike.

This robust filter was recently put to the test and provided safe drinking water for hundreds of families in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic after Hurricane Maria ravaged the islands in 2017.

FILTER

Use Instructions: Your Nalgene OG Woodsman comes with our Outdoor Filter. Before using the filter for the first time or if the filter has not been used for an extended period, then it is best to fill your bottle and let the filter sit in the water for at least 45 minutes. This will allow the Outdoor Filtration media to get saturated and improve the flow of water. Also the filter flow will improve with consistent use.

CARE

Care Instructions: The bottle, lid, and straw are dishwasher safe but we always recommend that you hand wash the bottle, straw and lid with mild dish soap and warm water. The Outdoor Filter is not dishwasher safe. Never use soap on the filter itself. For cleaning the outside of the filter, we recommend just using warm water and a brush.

Best way to care for you Nalgene OG: Put the Nalgene OG, lid, & straw, in a sink filled with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap and let it soak. If you’d prefer, you can also put the warm water and soap in the bottle to soak for a few minutes. Shake it to distribute the soapy water, rinse really well and let it dry. As long as you use a small amount of a mild soap, there shouldn’t be any soapy taste left in the bottle. However, if you’d rather skip the soap you can use warm water and lemon or warm water and baking soda to clean the bottle. Let the Nalgene OG, lid, & straw dry in a dish rack until use. Now go enjoy some Epic Water!
